Noodles & Co. data breach compromises years of transactions

If you used a credit card to make a purchase at Noodles & Co. this year, your account may be at risk.

Noodles & Co. CEO, Kevin Reddy, confirmed that the company was told about the presence of malware in its credit- and debit-card-processing system. Executives began investigating “unusual activity” on May 17, they confirmed the data breach June 2 and it was announced the breach on June 28.

Here’s the statement:

Since that time, Noodles & Company has been working with third-party forensic investigators to determine how the security compromise occurred and what information was affected. The Company has confirmed that malware may have stolen credit or debit card data from some credit and debit cards used at certain Noodles & Company locations.

Many customers found out about a potential problem from their banks.

JUST ANNOUNCED: The Employee Communications, PR and Social Media Summit at Microsoft HQ.

The Denver Post reported on May 23 that a Denver Community Credit Union customer received an email from the bank that read:

We have received information from Visa that during a recent security review, your Visa card number was identified as possibly being compromised at Noodles & Company locations and is at risk for unauthorized charges. Don’t worry — you won’t have to worry about paying for unauthorized charges because your card is backed by Visa’s Zero Liability protection (some limitations apply).

At that time, Noodles & Co. confirmed only that their investigation was “ongoing.”

From the Post:

Either way, consumers aren’t responsible for fraudulent activity on their credit card — whether they paid using a magnetic-stripe card or chip card. The cost is paid by the merchant, bank or the credit agency.
