Twitter will live-stream Republican and Democratic conventions

Twitter is expanding its live-streaming capabilities this election season.

The social media platform has partnered with CBSN to provide all-day coverage from the Republican and Democratic conventions. According to multiple reports, Twitter will air CBS’s commercials.

This marks the first time Twitter will live-stream a non-sporting event.

"Twitter is the fastest way to find out what's happening in politics and to have a discussion about it," Twitter CFO Anthony Noto said in a statement. "By bringing the live discussion of the Republican and Democratic national conventions together with CBSN's live video stream of the proceedings, we believe we're giving people around the world the best way to experience democracy in action."

Twitter execs have long tried to expand the channel’s live-streaming capabilities—first on the user side with Periscope, and now with a push toward more partnerships with media outlets like it did last week by streaming Wimbledon coverage.

Twitter also recently announced a partnership with the NFL for the 2016 season. Here’s the jist via a press release:

[We will] provide free, live streaming video of Thursday Night Football without authentication to the over 800 Million registered and non-registered users worldwide on the Twitter platform on mobile phones, tablets, PCs and connected TVs.

Though the probability of streaming the conventions remains unclear, Recode points out:

Twitter’s new playbook is pretty darn clear: Obtain rights to the kind of video content people want to see and stream it live for them directly on Twitter, where they can tweet about it, or watch other people tweet about it, all in one place.
