What is the reason behind the killing of The Voice's Christina Grimmie?

As of June 22, the police has closed the investigation:

Kevin Loibl was a mentally unstable fan with an extreme obsession for Christina Grimmie. He wanted her so much that he killed her.

Though he had no record of mental illness, Kevin displayed peculiar traits. His dad Paul said Kevin covered his bedroom windows with aluminum foils and thick curtains because of his aversion to light. He was uncomfortable with noise and often wore earplugs. His supervisor at Best Buy said Kevin was “socially awkward, detached,” and lacked social skills. He barely interacted with other employees and customers, keeping to himself in the back of the store working on computers.

There were no signs at home that Kevin was a rabid fan of Christina. His family never saw him watching her performances. He had no posters or merchandise in his room. It was Kevin’s co-workers who knew “he watched everything having to do with her” and tracked her social media posts. They teased him good-naturedly about his “internet crush.” What they didn’t know was the extent of his obsession.

Kevin lost 50 pounds, got LASIK surgery and hair implants, and had his teeth whitened to look attractive for Christina. Previously an atheist, he told a friend that Christina’s Christian beliefs “changed him” and “helped him to see the world in a different way.” If there is a God, Kevin said, he “has seen it in her.”

The friend was Corey Dennington, a co-worker who knew Kevin for 15 years. Everyone knew he was “Kevin’s only friend in the world.” Six to eight weeks before the murder, Kevin threatened to end this friendship when Corey reminded him that his “unrealistic infatuation” with Christina was not healthy or normal. That it was illogical to believe that he could be in a romantic relationship with her.

Kevin said that Christina was his “soul mate.”

At around 10 pm on June 10 at the Plaza Live Theater, Christina was doing a meet-and-greet after her concert when Kevin approached her. He fired five times. Her brother Marcus tackled him. Kevin squirmed free, backed up against the wall, and shot himself in the head. Christina and her killer died that night.

With no criminal history, Kevin purchased his guns legally.

Video footage supplied by witnesses showed Kevin standing in the back of the show during the concert. Kevin arrived in Orlando from St. Petersburg by cab at around 1:30 pm the day before. The room he checked in for the night had no luggage or personal belongings. His bed looked like he slept with the covers on. From the time he checked in, the hotel desk manager thought Kevin seemed “strange,” and immediately thought of him as the suspect upon hearing of Christina’s murder.

There were no signs or evidence that Christina and Kevin ever interacted. Kevin’s phone was encrypted and he seemed to have destroyed his computer’s hard drive. Christina’s phone contained no threatening messages. He never mentioned anything about going to the concert, or buying guns, or doing anyone harm. She never mentioned receiving unwanted or overly aggressive attention from any fans.

In hindsight, Corey said he observed “a lot of weird things and a lot of sad things.” Kevin returned magazines he borrowed months ago and told him he was “tired and ready to ascend.” He also said to Corey, “I love you, brother.”

Christina Grimmie did absolutely nothing to get herself killed. It was a mentally unstable fan’s obsession with her that proved fatal.
