If the perpetrator had entered the USA recently from a Muslim country then it’s possible it would have a positive impact. But the guy responsible was born in the USA and was an American citizen. A total ban on the entry of Muslims to the United states wouldn’t have done anything to prevent this tragedy. But it would have kept the Mayor of London out, along with all the legitimate Muslim businessmen wanting to invest in America and Muslim tourists wanting to come and spend their money in the USA… oh and Muhammed Ali as well. It will also keep out any potential terrorists who aren’t clever enough to lie on their immigration forms, but what are the chances that someone who wants to murder Americans is also prepared to lie on a piece of paper?
This tragedy will focus attention on the fact that Trump’s “ban” is a soundbite and a thought bubble and wouldn’t have prevented this tragedy or any similar future tragedies. But it will anger American Muslim’s and make the task of radicalising at-risk young people a hell of a lot easier.
