People often understand communist party in China as one constant entity, this is a huge misconception, and this kind of oriental understanding of Chinese political landscape is the reason why questions like this one is around. CCP's rule evolves and at different stages after PRC is formed, the government has been putting their focus on different things.
The modern day China evolved from lots of years of pillage and struggle from the foreign invasion, warlords fighting against each other, Japanese invasion and civil war. Despite the mistakes made early on, CCP has done the best job in the world elimination poverty in a developing country, China's extreme poverty rate declined from about 90% in 1960s to about 10% now, proverty rate declined from 80% in 1980s to about 30% now. Would any government as obnoxious as what the western media has been painting do this to the poor in the country?
Why would educated people in China support democracy as you suggest? What is good about democracy? Yea, communist rule may seems dreadful to a westerner after being brainwashed by 50 years of anti communist propaganda. But do not mess up the concepts, China has long moved away from "communism" but adopted the path of socialism. What is bad about that? My own mother for example, she had blood cancer in 1980s when she was in university coming from a single income family with 6 children. Thanks to the policies at that time, she could get in college for free and she got the marrow transplant for free too. For me, speaking from both head and heart, socialism is a beautiful ideal where people with different natural endowment can care for each other as if they are in a family, beats the shit out of the idea that everyone lives for themselves only.
Why do "educated" people in the west support democracy so blindly? To me, they either do not think enough or do not care enough or they are too smug to think seriously about the benefit of an organic society or after all these years of taming they are too scared to think anything else could work. The success of a non democratic China must be scaring the shit out of them.
