Barilla sponsored ‘study’ fools consumers

Is pasta good for you? In the worlds of health and marketing, it depends whom you ask.

A study from the journal Nutrition and Diabetes, which recently launched a study to determine the health effects of pasta found that “pasta consumption was negatively associated with BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio and with a lower prevalence of overweight and obesity.”

Great news for pasta lovers, right?

There’s a catch.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this press release, you’ll see that “the study was partially supported by Barilla.”

A rep for Barilla—a well-known pasta brand—said the organization was “encouraged by the findings.”

Here are the facts: A famous pasta company partially funded a study that concluded pasta doesn’t contribute to weight gain or a higher body mass index.

The results were likely skewed because the study’s participants followed diet closer to what Americans call the Mediterranean Diet, which relies less on meat and more on veggies.
