In Pixar's Monsters films, how do the monsters enter a room through a door if there is nothing behind the door when you don't go around it?

The movies ask you to believe that, when properly configured and energized, the doors function as a portal between worlds. It's called the willing suspension of disbelief.

It's fantasy, so there's no physics-based answer for it.
