Starbucks and McDonald’s filter Wi-Fi to prevent pornography access

If you’re planning on using free Wi-Fi to look at NSFW content at McDonald’s and Starbucks, think again.

The companies have announced that they will begin filtering out pornography from their networks.

The announcements come after pressure from Enough Is Enough and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. Both groups have been asking for those that offer public Wi-Fi to install measures that prevent people from using them to view pornography.

The Starbucks and McDonald’s announcements are a huge win for the groups. Enough Is Enough’s president, Donna Rice Hughes, said in a statement:

Parents can have peace of mind that, when they or their children go to McDonald's, they will have a safer and more friendly WiFi experience, filtered from pornography, from child porn and from potential sexual exploitation and predation. McDonald's deserves widespread praise for this act of corporate responsibility and commitment to children and family safety.

Starbucks and McDonald’s representatives said that though they didn’t have a problem with consumers accessing pornography, but their moves will hopefully ensure that it doesn’t become one.

A spokesman for Starbucks said:

Once we determine that our customers can access our free Wi-Fi in a way that also doesn't involuntarily block unintended content, we will implement this in our stores. In the meantime, we reserve the right to stop any behavior that interferes with our customer experience, including what is accessed on our free Wi-Fi.

McDonald’s U.K. restaurants already had anti-pornography filters in place, but the current announcement adds the measure to the company’s U.S. restaurants. A company spokesman said:

McDonald's is committed to providing a safe environment for our customers. We had not heard from our customers that this was an issue, but we saw an opportunity that is consistent with our goal of providing an enjoyable experience for families.
