What happens if someone confesses to a crime someone else was already executed for?

Assuming the person confessing actually did the crime, one of the worst tragedies of the legal system is what happens; and also the biggest reason to not have a Death Penalty.

If someone is wrongly executed, even if the preponderance of evidence suggests guilt, how does the State “Take it back”?
