Since someone, or something, found that answer too short, here is additional information. Eyesight is required for being a pilot. Humans evolved for swinging in trees and walking on the ground. Our vestibular system is useless for flight, so orientation has to be to a visual reference, either to a view of the outside world or to instruments.
