The disguised advice was, "You can judge a man and a marriage by who has a nicer car - the husband or the wife."
It was an observation in an era, but I guess the disguised advice was ... put the ones you love at least higher on the list than yourself, and life will be good.
Take them for granted, you'll end up with nothing that matters.
