- We’re all a little bit sexist and racist. We’re all a little bit groupist. We’re much better at perceiving discrimination against our ingroup than against our outgroups, whatever they may be. The difference is that some of us decide that such discrimination is wrong and take active steps to mitigate our propensity for groupism.
- People don’t argue from evidence or reason, notably when it comes to religious or political questions. Instead, we form strong bonds of identity with a specific ideology, then preferentially seek out reasons to continue believing what we already want to believe. We overlook weaknesses in arguments or evidence for what we want to believe and are really good at identifying fallacies and non sequiturs in arguments that threaten our cherished beliefs.
- Circumcision isn’t mutilation. It doesn’t lead to penises being less sensitive. And while the benefits from STD reduction aren’t huge in the developed world, in the developing world it makes a real difference in HIV and HPV transmission.
- While the damage on many people is deep, most people who grow up with corporal punishment aren’t scarred. It’s not something I’ll use when/if I have kids some day but I was beaten/flogged with a leather belt more times than I can count. In fact, growing up, I knew of only one family that didn’t beat their kids. None of us feel like we were abused. This may have to do with the fact that it was the cultural norm.
- I really don’t give a shit about philosophy. Either I agree or I don’t. Like, I found that I was an existentialist and I thought “okay, cool. Who cares?”
- I don’t think it’d be that big of a deal for Iran to get nuclear weapons. Wouldn’t you want them if you were in their position? Why should they meekly accept our domination? That wouldn’t be very rational of them now, would it?
- I’m pretty pro-Palestinian in my sympathies. Israel may have been weak once upon a time but it’s been the Goliath in the region for decades and I think the US policy of standing by their every action is misguided.
- I support the legalization of physician-assisted suicide everywhere.
- I think prostitution should be legalized and regulated like a business everywhere.
- While I deplore terrorism and any kind of violence against civilians, I think terrorism is a legitimate response to foreign occupation. In the conflict between the US and Islamic terrorists, we have killed a lot more innocent civilians than they have. Are the lives of Pakistani villagers worth less than our own?
- I don’t think Republicans are “voting against their own interests.” I think saying that is quite insulting, actually. People have the right to define their own interests for themselves. I’m a physician. Trump is going to cut my taxes, “bigly.” By voting against him, I too could be said to have voted against my own interests. But interest is not solely pecuniary.
- I don’t think there’s any such thing as a “dirty old man.” If you want to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh well into your 90s and you have consenting partners, go for it. In fact, I think younger people who sleep with consenting senior citizens are doing something very kind. So, if you’re a 78 year old woman with a 21-year old lover, I only have 3 words for you: good for you!
- I have known many adult men who have confessed that they were sexually attracted to adolescent girls. I’m glad we live in a society where we by and large don’t tolerate such relationships, due to the high potential for exploitation. That said, I don’t think these men are “sick” or “pigs” either. If you take into account how human evolution proceeded over the centuries, it’s not all that surprising that sexual attraction towards teenagers would have survived as a trait.
- Just like Roman colonization had benefits for Western Europe, I think European colonization had many benefits for Africa. Hell, I’ll go ahead and say it: I think, in spite of all the horror and carnage of the early conquest and the rapacious attitude and racism of the colonizers, overall the effects were more positive than negative.
