Why isn't it a crime for a lawyer to defend a person who they know is guilty?

Because our system of justice is trial by jury, not trial by defense counsel.

Because we believe so strongly in the principle of due process that we enshrine it on our Constitution.

Because a key component of due process is the right to counsel for the accused.

Because we insist that a conviction is only valid if the accused is afforded due process.

Because we have learned from history that the alternative invites abuse and tyranny.
