Why do American eggs have white shells and British ones have brownish shells?

I live in the U.S., and I’ve never been to an actual supermarket that didn’t carry both white eggs and brown eggs.
The shell color depends on the breed of chicken. Some people have a preference, but there isn’t really any difference apart from the shell color itself.
