Uber and Snap Inc. team up for new duel-app feature

Uber and Snap Inc. have announced a new partnership that lets riders unlock exclusive photo filters within the ride-hailing app.

Users can add the filters and send snaps to friends via the Snapchat app.

Uber’s latest improvements to its app include a feature that lets you choose a person as your destination instead of a location. Once the person is locked in and they’re on their way with the driver, Uber will prompt the user to send a snap to the person who’s waiting.

Users can choose from three customizable features filters: “Your ETA,” “Your Ride” and “Mystery.” When you choose a filter on Uber, it automatically opens Snapchat.

Here’s what it looks like on your phone:

Here’s how Uber describes it in a blog post:

Whether you want to let friends know when you'll arrive with our ETA filters, show how you roll with our ride filters or select a mystery filter for an added surprise, you now have a fun and social way to share you’re in an Uber.

Users looking to add the friend-as-destination feature can follow these steps (via Uber):

  • Sync your contacts with the Uber app.
  • Type in a friend’s name in the “Where to?” box.
  • Your friend will receive a request from Uber to provide their current static location.
  • Once they accept, their location is used as your destination and you can be on your way.

From there, your friends will see updates on your ETA.
