I believe doctors are overpaid.
Don't get me wrong; what they do is very important and I happen to admire doctors. But think about it for a moment. An important issue in politics worldwide is the cost of healthcare. Let's analyze the issue in the Socratic method:
Why doesn't everyone have access to health insurance/healthcare?
It’s expensive.
Why is insurance/healthcare expensive?
Doctors, especially specialists, have very high salaries, and hospitals/insurance companies need to cover those costs.
Why do doctors have high salaries?
For the most part, doctors had to go into deep debt during medical school, and they usually don't start making net gains until fairly late into their career.
Why is medical school expensive?
Because doctors have high salaries, a high tuition can be arbitrarily justified by our society and by schools. And this isn't just the fault of our medical schools. Existing doctors play a major role in medical education, and they are not going to accept a reduction in compensation, since they too are likely in debt.
See where we're going? It's a vicious cycle that can't be stopped without making either the new generation or the old generation of doctors unhappy.
