Lipo-lymphedema. Lymph leaks into the fat cells in the lower half of the body and just looks like fat, or cellulite, in the early stages. Later it distorts your gait and eventually reduces your mobility to nothing.
I'd never heard of this, and thought “some women just really let themselves go”.
Then I found out I had it. I knew I wasn't letting myself go.
It's mostly only women who have it. It's not rare. One in 12? women have some degree of either lipoedema, lymphoedema or the combination of the two -like me.
You can't get rid of this fluid by diet or excercise . There's a very expensive surgical procedure but it's not covered by most medical policies because it's considered “cosmetic” surgery.
There are compression tights and things to make it a livable conditioning in the first stages but in the end, it's just horrific.
I'm hoping to be run over by a bus before I reach stage two, never mind stage 3.
