Because Trump has galvanized Democrats in a way that no candidate before him ever has.
This election goes beyond issues and political ideology. Most Democrats see a Trump Presidency as literally the worst possible thing that could happen to this country. This isn’t just an undesirable outcome like Romney or McCain would have been, and Bush was. This is Old Testament, End of Days bad.
Trump has said that he could shoot someone and still get elected. I think that’s even more true of Hillary. The fact that everyone knows she would never do that (and no one is really sure Trump wouldn’t) makes her even more electable. The GOP managed to nominate the one candidate who can make everyone look past all the problems Hillary presents. No one is going to renounce her or distance themselves from her, because doing so would be at least tacitly endorsing the worst candidate we’ve had in living memory.
