Why do people think that the officer will not show up to court for a speeding ticket?

Sometimes they don’t.

Different agencies put varying emphasis on the importance of appearance for court. In some places, if you don’t show up, no one much cares (on minor cases, anyway). At other places, if you miss court once, you’ll get a written reprimand. Miss it twice or more, and you might get suspended or fired.

I missed court twice in 15 years, and I had as many or more appearances than anyone (my record was seven in one day). One defense attorney referred to me as “Old Faithful”. I knew other cops where it was a even toss as to whether they would show up or not. What happened to them as a result was a function of their political standing.
