Do I believe Hillary Clinton is entirely honest? Nope. I don’t. Do I believe it is true that politicians have public and private positions. Yup. And it doesn’t bother me even a little bit.
We live in a world where politicians get slammed from every direction on little soundbites. It is very hard for them to formulate and express any kind of complex position. So they come out with these little bits that can in no way express the complexity of what they really think, never mind what they believe they can actually accomplish. It is virtually impossible for them to get their true thoughts out.
Sometimes politicians may hold a personal view, but as part of representing their constituencies, they are willing to accept a different view. As long as they actually do what they promise, that isn’t a lie. It is a private view that they hold, and a public statement of what they are willing to enforce. Nothing wrong with that.
Do I like liars? No, not particularly. But I accept politicians for what they are and what we have made them to be. And that means the successful ones lie. Hopefully, they don’t lie about really important things. Like this, for example When presidents lie to make a war | DD Guttenplan
