What is the most British thing ever?

Reading Ernest W. Adams' answer to What is the most British thing ever? regarding British AFVs being equipped with BVs (boiling vessels) that enable the occupants to make, amongst other things, tea, reminded me of a little story I once read.

The following episode was recorded by Bert Chaney who was serving with the 7th London TA battalion infantry during the first world war and recounts an incident that occured in the full midst of battle.

To set the scene, as heavy fighting ensued, artillery shells falling about them, machine gun fire scything across the terrain, men on both sides lie both dead and wounded, a British MkIV enters the fray only to become grounded on a tree trunk. The crew, having exhausted all means of freeing the tank whilst still inside, decide to get out of the tank in an attempt to remedy the situation.

“Stretching themselves, scratching heads, the men slowly and deliberately walked around their vehicle inspecting it from every angle and then appeared to hold a conference among themselves” ……..”After standing around for a few minutes looking somewhat lost, they calmly took from inside the tank a primus stove and using the side of the tank as a cover from enemy fire, sat down and made themselves some tea”. Bert Chaney, 7th london TA
