Every German soldier knew in April of 1945 that the war was lost and still Hitler and his generals prepared to defend Berlin.
Not that they hoped to change the outcome of the war, they just wanted to win a few extra days for themselves to live.
The outcome of this battle was clear to everybody from the beginning. The Germans didn't have the slightest chance.
Many lives were lost in vain on both sides.
Berlin was full of refugees fleeing the Red Army and therefore a lot of civilians died during the fighting. Their lives could have been spared if the Germans would have surrendered before the battle.
I don't think there is any battle in
history that was more unnecessary and senseless, both from a military and from a morale point of view.
