Oh, um, I worked in a lab where we inflicted traumatic brain injuries on mice. I have to tell you, it really sucked and I felt terribly for each one in the beginning. I would say a small prayer in rememberance after each victim. We also did mouse surgeries on the (sometimes imperfectly but usually sufficiently) anesthetized animals to extract their brains for tissue culture. I did this upwards of 10+ times. I injured probably 50 or more mice. I also have had to cut tails off of baby mice for genotyping (you cut them off before the nerve endings grow in).
But, after talking to a post-doc, you have to keep in mind that advancements are being made for human health and science at the lowest possible ethical cost possible.
