Fox News settles Roger Ailes harassment suit

Fox News’ parent company has agreed to a landmark $20 million lawsuit settlement for former on-air personality Gretchen Carlson.

The former co-host of “Fox & Friends accused recently ousted Fox News chairman, Roger Ailes, of sexual harassment.

Several women corroborated Carlson’s claims that Ailes—who has since left the network with a $40 million exit agreement—routinely made advances toward female on-air talent.

Vanity Fair was the first to report on the agreement, and reports at least two other women who filed complaints against Ailes have settled out of court.

Carlson tweeted the following on Tuesday:

She also issued the following statement:

I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint. I'm ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace. I want to thank all the brave women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me in their #StandWithGretchen. All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace in which talent, hard work and loyalty are recognized, revered and rewarded.

Ailes, despite being named in the lawsuit, will not be paying any of the $20 million. Fox’s parent company, 21st Century Fox, will pay.

COMMUNICATORS:
Stop being an order taker and become a strategic partner.

21st Century Fox apologized to Carlson in a public statement:

21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that it has settled Gretchen Carlson's lawsuit. During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team. We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve.

Minutes after news of the settlement rocked the network, it was hit with another blow when one of its senior show hosts, Greta Van Susteren, announced her resignation, effective immediately.
