Enormously. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine, when I was either an undergraduate or a graduate student, that I would become a professor, let alone at UC Berkeley. I never imagined I would write a best-selling book. Or that I would create two cosmology projects that would lead to Nobel Prizes. I had imagined that I would work in some physics lab somewhere doing ordinary work.
And, of course, I never imagined that I would love my children and grandchildren so much. How could anyone imagine that before those children are born?
