What happens if I do not tip my waiter in the U.S.?

When I was young and had received my first credit card I decided to break it in at a decent restaurant by treating my father to a nice meal. I did not realize (having never filled in a credit card receipt before) how to add in a tip and ended up just paying the tab and stiffing the waitress of her very deserving tip. After reviewing the receipt the following morning I noticed my error and was mortified!  I promptly called the restaurant back explaining what had happened and that our waitress was charming and gracious and that through no fault of her own should my neglect of her tip reflect on her service in any way and that upon my next visit I promised to tip her double.
On my next visit I requested the same server's table so I could pay her as promised. She immediately recognized me and thanked me. She confided that because of my phone call she had been made floor manager and because of that she wanted to pay for my meal! That brought tears to my eyes. I had been so worried for weeks that I had caused problems for this lady at her place of employment when in reality my heart-felt phone call was probably the best tip I could have ever left.
