30 jobs in the PR and marketing world

Though many PR pros have fine-tuned their editing, networking and pitching prowess, experts say it’s time to show off your curiosity, adaptability and dedication to learning.

LinkedIn’s Eddie Vivas says the top three secrets to getting hired in 2016 have a lot in common with skills unique to PR.

Here are three tips:

1. Dust off your rolodex, Excel spreadsheet or whatever you’ve been using to keep track of colleagues’ contacts throughout the years. Someone you’ve only met once or twice could lead you to a new opportunity.

From Vivas via Fast Company:

It’s less [about] who you know, [and more about] who you know knows. Even if you don't know someone directly at a company, chances are you know someone who knows someone. We’ve learned it’s not necessarily your best friend who’s going to help you land that next job . It's more likely to be your best friend’s former co-worker, or even that co-worker’s neighbor.

2. If you’re an emerging communications professional, Vivas says not to get caught up in the specifics of your education history, or what you think a certain degree qualifies you to do.

He says:

The world is simply changing too quickly for even young professionals to rely on the hard-won skills from their college years. You may choose a well-researched major or what looks to be a stable career path, but there’s no guarantee those skills will be in demand in 10 years. Work your connections. Keep learning. Stay flexible.

As advancements in technology emerge, try to land a position that won't soon be on the chopping block. To stay ahead of the pack, show off your curiosity and commitment to being a lifelong learner.

Employers in 2016 are looking for traits that can’t be automated, Vivas says.

3. Despite prevailing indicators, Vivas says job seekers have more power than they might think.

“Take more direct control over [your] careers and livelihoods,” he says. “In the process, job seekers will not only enjoy more connectedness and company transparency than ever before, they'll also become savvier about promoting their professional brands online.”
