Twitter revives familiar marketing strategy

Seven years ago, Twitter unveiled the slogan/ call to action: What’s happening.

This week, execs brought it back.

As Twitter tries to find its footing after slowed growth and increasing competition from other social media networks, it’s heading toward a rebranding of sorts—without actually calling it a rebranding.

VIRTUAL SUMMIT: The mobile revolution is here. Reach customers in 2016 and beyond on their mobile devices.

In a blog post , Twitter CMO Leslie Berland wrote:

We heard loud and clear that those who use Twitter do so because they know exactly what Twitter is for and why it’s important in their lives. The majority of people who use Twitter the most told us it’s the best and fastest way to see what’s happening.

She continued:

Starting today, we’re taking steps to express what we’re for and what we’ve always been. Twitter is where you go to see what’s happening everywhere in the world right now. From breaking news and entertainment to sports and politics - from big events to everyday interests with all the live commentary that makes Twitter unique. In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be rolling out marketing including videos and digital ads that center around seeing what’s happening on Twitter.

Twitter unveiled the approach in a video:

The tech company previously used the prompt “What’s happening” as a way to inspire people to tweet.

What do you think of what Berland labeled “a new look and feel in our marketing”? Will it help Twitter regain some of the relevance it has lost?
