It makes a lot of sense. Many burglars wait long enough for the victim to replace what was taken, then hit again. After all, they know where a lot of new stuff is.
Long ago, in a different lifetime, I worked for a Private Investigator. We also provided guard service and sold alarms on the side. I noticed that every single alarm customer was someone who had just been burgled. Every single one.
I decided then and there that, when I bought a house, I would install the alarm first thing. I have done so with every property I’ve owned.
If someone wants into your house badly enough, they will get in. Nothing you can do will prevent that. What you can do, though, is make your neighbor’s house look much more attractive.
You can also almost always save on your homeowner’s insurance policy if you have a good, monitored alarm system. The savings often pay for the monitoring cost.
(BTW, don’t buy alarms from door-to-door salespeople. There’s been a race to the bottom in that market, and most of the systems aren’t very good. Find an old-school alarm company that knows how to do it right.)
