One of my old high school friends went to our 15 year reunion. She and I kept touch thorough college and beyond. She was in my bridal party. And even attended my daughter's birth. ( she was an obstetrics murse)
She brought pics of my daughter and the wedding. When she started showing them, the entire table went silent.
One woman finally spoke up.
“You mean Lisa isnt GAY? She was a feminist you know.”
I rarely dated in high school, but I had been to two date dances and two proms. I skipped my senior prom because I wasn't seeing anyone special. I was fussy, practical and pretty broke at 17.
And the result of it was being thought a lesbian…by my entire graduating class.
Lovely.
(There is nothing wrong with gay. But it was so off the mark.)
And for shits and giggles I went to see the movie Polyester the night of the Senior prom. Don't Cry for me, Argentina!
