I originally learned this because I kept getting frustrated that while I was holding a scale or triangle or level or measuring tape I'd have to let go to open a pen. (I typically don't carry pencils with me.) I never thought twice about it except for its pragmatic usefulness.
I can't tell you how many times I've done this stupid, simple little action in a meeting and people have been awed and impressed by it. It somehow makes them think I'm smarter than I actually am. (whew....) I guess a modicum of phalangeal dexterity goes a long way to compensate for social awkwardness and ostensible incompetence. :P
