The Lord of the Rings is a legend, not a novel. Its full name, which the publishers would not let Tolkien use, is The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King. It’s like the story of Jesus. It doesn’t really matter that you know how it comes out. You read it for the language, and for interactions of the characters.
Bear in mind that it was written before most people had televisions. It’s not a slam-bang action thriller. There are long passages describing the landscape or the weather. If you don’t like reading for reading’s own sake, you may not like the books.
