As a person who absolutely doesn’t believe in the supernatural, I do nevertheless believe I saw a ghost, that seemed very real. I guess I have lots of explanations but it doesn’t take away the - what is it, feeling, knowledge, insight, suggestion? - that the ghost was there.
I was in the Cumberland Hotel at the end of Oxford Street in London, in a room over looking Great Cumberland Place. At about 2.00am I woke to see a person dressed in 18th Century army clothes leaning over me. He was just looking at me. The room was dark but not without light from outside through the curtains. At that moment I wasn’t frightened, just shocked, and I realised what was going on and moved to turn the bedside light on - and the figure disappeared.
Then I felt very frightened although the figure hadn’t been at all threatening or menacing, just looking at me.
I told my wife and other people, including my father, who also didn’t believe in the supernatural at all. He said it was interesting because that was the site of Tyburn, one of the most important public execution places in London. I hadn’t known that before but it did seem to be relevant.
