How unsafe is a gun range?

Gun ranges are extremely safe, actually.

I’m aware of maybe a half dozen murders have have happened at firearm ranges over 30 odd years, and a few more accidental deaths.

Let’s break this down:

  • I mean Bullets can ricochet off the walls,
    • Every range has rules that generally say that you have to shoot at the backstop… That’s designed to be shot at, and not send ricochets in a dangerous direction. Most gun ranges also enforce what we call the “180 degree” rule… That is, nobody can be in front of the muzzles of guns being fired. Any ricochets are almost always only dangerous in that general direction. I’ve never heard of a ricochet killing someone at a range. Ever.
  • firearms can go off by accident,
    • No, they can’t. Guns don’t go off on their own, at least those made in the past 100 odd years. Guns go off when you pull the trigger.
  • people can intentionally shoot someone and then say oopsy.
    • If you intentionally shoot someone at a range, surrounded by other people with firearms, you probably won’t say much, as you’ll be filled with lead and dead before you hit the floor. Most organized ranges have a person in charge called the range master. They are armed. That gun is not for show.
  • Or a psychopath can actually mow down people when no one is looking (American Sniper film).
    • Again, at an organized range with any number of people, good luck with that. Most psychopaths aren’t that stupid.

Gun ranges have safety rules. Often, long lists of them. They are typically enforced both by range staff and other range users to the letter. Even small violations will get you yelled at. Large or repeated ones will get you kicked off the range. Do something intentionally stupid enough, and you might get shot.

As a result of this, shooting sports are some of the safest sports in the world.
