You’re going to find it’s quite easy to keep a handgun from cycling. Just don’t get in the way of the barrel, because it will fire when you pull the trigger.
If you have your hand on the slide, and grip it firmly, it will not cycle. This will leave a spent shell in the chamber, and you will have to manually cycle the action to prepare the next round to fire. Theoretically, in a self defense situation, you could do this to an assailants handgun and get him to shoot in a safe direction as you do so, temporarily disabling his firearm and changing the initiative of the situation.
However, unless you’re on skill-par with John Wick…
I’d leave sly tricks like this to action movies. Your best bet is to either have a gun of your own, or better yet evade the situation entirely.
