If you were to get a tattoo (or another one), what would it be?

I made a rough sketch of a few I might get when I turn 18.

(Yes, I'm aware of how girly my handwriting is fml.)

Allow me to explain.

The first one is a green ribbon — the symbol for bipolar awareness. Below are the lyrics “This one’s a fighter” from the song The Fighter by Gym Class Heroes. Chances are that would go on either my shoulder or ankle because I can’t really picture that particular tattoo on any other body part. I picked those lyrics because I don’t want to say “I’m a Survivor” or “I beat bipolar” or something like that because the truth is I still have bipolar disorder, and there’s always a possibility that I might be stuck with it for the rest of my life. Instead, I want the message to be that some things may be unbeatable, but putting up any sort of fight against it is less painful than doing nothing and letting the disorder win.

The second one consists of two quotes from the YouTubers Phil Lester (AmazingPhil) and Dan Howell (danisnotonfire). I don't feel like retyping them so just read it in the picture above. Separating the two quotes are cat whiskers, Dan and Phil's trademark icon. I'm not a crazy Tumblr phanboy or anything, but I do find that Dan and Phil have delivered some wise words everyone should live by. I'd probably get these on my waist in one or two long lines of words with cat whiskers in between rather than the paragraph-ish thing I wrote (I didn't have enough room in the notebook fml).

The third is a (slightly badly drawn) butterfly, an unofficial symbol of being clean of self-harm or self-destructive behavior amongst people with mental health issues. I plan to add a tally mark underneath for every year I went without trying to purposely self-destruct. I don't have anything because I haven't gone a year without doing dangerous shit yet. This one will be printed really small on my wrist so I can cover it up in professional settings but still keep it as a reminder to myself of mistakes I should never make again.

The last one — "With so much left to do, you'll be missing out, and we'll be missing you…" — are lyrics from the song Missing You by All Time Low. This tattoo isn't for me (though Missing You is my favourite song), but rather for the rest of the world. It's a reassurance for anyone struggling in life that bad things are always temporary and things do get better in time. I'd probably place it somewhere really visible like my forearm for anyone to see and be comforted by it. This one's my favourite because the words and design itself are simplistic, but the overarching message speaks volumes.
