More than 355,000 customers affected in Arby’s data breach

The fast food chain that likes to remind its customers that it “[has] the meats” also has a data breach.

Cyber Security journalist Brian Krebs first reported the breach, in which hackers gained credit card information for as many as 355,000 customers.

The information was gained after the hackers installed malware on the payment systems in hundreds of corporate-owned Arby’s locations. Franchise locations were not accepted.

Although the breach was discovered in January, the chain had not yet made the news public—at the FBI’s request, a spokesman told Krebs.

Arby’s told reporters that it has fixed the malware problem. In a statement, the company explained how it handled the breach:

Upon learning of the incident, ARG immediately notified law enforcement and enlisted the expertise of leading security experts, including Mandiant. While the investigation is ongoing, ARG quickly took measures to contain this incident and eradicate the malware from systems at restaurants that were impacted.

PSCU, which reports such breaches to banks, first got wind of the problem in January. It reported to the banks at the time that a “large fast food restaurant chain” was affected, and that the breach was thought to have occurred between October and January.

Arby’s says customers should check their accounts for any unauthorized purchases and report to their bank any such instances.
