I personally think high pay for government officials is a good thing.
Call me politically naive, but i personally think paying the people who are supposed to take care of us a lot of money is a good thing.
For example, say a guy is used to being paid a certain amount, but finds to his dismay that he is expected to carry out his duties all year round for a much lower salary. If he is a man of good moral standing he will dutifully do his job yes, but the temptation to embezzle funds and use the tax money for his own personal gain is much higher.
But say he is given the position, and he is given a higher salary. He would likely be motivated to work hard and keep his job. Who wants to risk being caught embezzling funds or being accused of doing sloppy work and being fired from such a lucrative position?
I get that higher pay has negative effects as well, such as higher taxes and the likelihood that people will work to get into office only for the money. But again, the elected people will likely work harder to keep their high paying job. Not to mention this can draw more talented people to unmanned areas of the government as well.
