What does the Democratic Party need to do to win back the trust of working class White people?

Stop despising working class whites so much would be a good start.

I was privy to some research out of SRI International in the 70s, the Values and Lifestyle Program. In fact, I owned the entire $75,000 set of demographic surveys and analyses. Being in Palo Alto, California, my marketing at the time was directed at what they referred to as the “Inner-Directed Path,” in particular, the cohort they labeled Societally Conscious.

The working-class, white or otherwise—the middle class generally—SRI labeled Belongers, owing to their tendency to affiliate. Their insight into the Societally Conscious was that they were largely at that time raised Belonger but diverted to the Inner-Directed Path by a thorough repudiation of Belonger (middle-class) values.

There would be no Buick parked in the drive of a Societally Conscious household. Make it a Volvo. There would be no Jell-O served for dessert. Make it at least Haagen-Dazs. And so on in detail. The break from the middle class was reinforced by shunning all things associated with the middle class. We had teachers there angry that we let our sons watch television… how middle class. We had friends sneer at our enthusiasm for the local sports teams… how middle class. You let your sons play with toy guns!!!?

You will not be surprised to find out that the Societally Conscious cohort is almost exactly synonymous with progressives in the Democratic Party. Bill Clinton was not a Societally Conscious progressive. The working class, even rural ones, gave him their votes. His wife Hillary is one; they withheld their votes from her as her disdain was undisguisable. Obama’s loathing for the “bitter clingers” was quite evident as well.

How in the world will they win back the trust of the working class when the ticket price they paid for entry into that snooty club was disgust with the working class? Oh, to be sure, progressives have been very generous with one slice of the working class—those who belong to public sector unions and give back generously to the cause. But other working class people have been done much more harm than good by Societally Conscious progressives. Good luck winning them back.
