Let’s see, I’ve had a few.
When I was little, I thought that people had two nostrils to be symmetrical and not look stupid. I could only ever breathe out of one side of my nose and I thought that was normal. Turned out, at around 12, my mother actually paid attention when I told her I had never been able to breathe out of one side and we found out that I had a blockage in one nostril that had to be surgically removed.
Fluttering heartbeat, or as it is really known, a heart murmur. Like McKayla Kennedy, I’d always had the weird flutters and racing heartbeat at weird times and thought it was normal. Turns out, at 19, it was discovered I had a prolapsed mitral valve, typically a genetic condition (I got it from my dad), that usually expresses as a heart murmur.
I always ate anything I wanted and everyone chalked it up to high metabolism. That’s a normal thing, right? Well in my early 30’s I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Also likely hereditary (Again, dad. He had an uncle everyone called “Slim” and his half sister and half brother are skinny as sticks).
Apparently, I’m not normal, I’m a damn mess just waiting to be diagnosed.
