What words did you misuse or mispronounce when you were a kid?

My last name. I actually wrote another answer about this, too: Brooke Schwartz's answer to What are the biggest facepalm moments your children have given you?

On the first day of camp, my new counselor said to me, “Your name is Brooke Schwartz, right?”

“Shorts,” I corrected him.

“That’s what I said,” he said. “Schwartz.”

“No. Brooke Shorts,” I insisted.

“It says here Schwartz,” he read. “As in, S-C-H—”

“But it’s Shorts,” I interjected. “Like, as in pants.”

Silence for a beat. Then—

“You sure?” he probed.

“I think I’d know my last name!” I snapped, exasperated.

Later, I wanted to ask my mom—she’d prove that he was wrong; my name was Brooke Shorts.

“Mommy, my name is Brooke Shorts, right? As in, the pants?”

“What?” she said. “No, it’s Brooke Schwartz.”

“Oh,” I said. “Well…how’s it spelled?”

“S-C-H-W-A-R-T-Z.”

“Oh,” I realized. “’Kay.”
