If you are lost and somebody has a general idea of where you are and is expecting you back, stay put. You will be easier to find if you’re not moving around.
However, if nobody knows that you are lost, or has any idea at all where you are, and you really are alone in totally unfamiliar country, walk downhill. Downhill leads to water. When you find the water, go downstream. This eventually leads to people.
Juliane Koepcke was the sole survivor of a plane crash in 1971 in the Peruvian rainforest. Despite a broken collarbone and other injuries, she followed this advice that she learned from her father. She found a river and then floated on her back downstream, which used less energy than walking. She floated for nine days before finding a boat and a shelter. She waited there, realizing that it was in frequent use, and was found several hours later by lumbermen.
(There are obviously exceptions. Downhill doesn’t lead to water in the Sahara Desert, and it’s more important to find shelter in a blizzard than it is to stay put.)
