In postwar Israel, did some Israelis tend to belittle concentration camp survivors?

Sadly, yes.

We had a nation in trauma and a lot of self hatred. Dehumanization does that to people, and many just didn’t know how to deal. In the first decades after the war, there was a shame felt by many that they let this happen, a natural stage of trauma. My own grandparents felt ashamed of what was done to them.

Now that they were in their homeland, with an army and a sense of pride, looking back on being victimized was extremely humiliating.

This changed with the Eichmann trial, which provided a national healing.
