Young people are not immortal.
I can’t tell how many times I’ve heard people my senior say things to discount us because we are young. For me, because I have been watching what I’ve been eating really since I was 21ish, I decided to no longer eat what my parents eat and I’ve taken some heat for it. I stopped because most of it is simply counterproductive towards my physical goals (I want abs, and I want to look good naked).
They’ve said several things that have made me face palm a bit and lose a bit of faith in our older generation.
When you get old and fat like me, then you’ll have to worry about your health (my father).
Are you a health nut now? You need to make sure you eat what I cook for you since you don’t eat leftovers now (my mother).
I hate the gym, going to the gym is like taking a shower, its a mundane task and nothing about it is appealing (my mother).
It’s good you are looking out for your health, its always good to start young (I’m 25).
I think the point about health is important. Its ignorant to think that young people are not prone to getting disease. As high as obesity rates are here in America, it would be ignorant to think people can eat whatever they want because so-so is young.
The assumption that our youth is immortal because of age discounts any responsibility. Yes we are young, but to think that we can do whatever we want and THEN accept responsibility once we get into our thirties?
I do feel like our older generation, or parents in general need to be a bit more proactive about being responsible. No need to treat someone like an inferior to be all lax like nothing bad can happen. Things happen, and the worst thing a parent can do is wait until things hit the fan to finally say something.
So yes, sometimes I want to slap older generations for thinking we can’t get sick, or face the same problems someone 30 plus years might. No one is invincible, but lets not forget about the taste of this cheeseburger.
