Has a student ever made you (teacher) cry? Why?

I was teaching maths to 3rd grade students last year. The kids used to be at their mischievous best, but this one kid used to give me tough time.

He never wrote anything. Never listened to even one instruction. He won’t write a single answer in any test. He did not have any effect of scolding or warnings. I never beat any kid so I would only warn him. I even took him to the principal, but of no use. He was just not scared of anyone.

I decided to call his parents finally. I opened his school diary for the phone numbers but I noticed his Father’s details blank. I got angrier and thought how careless his parents were to not fill up their kid’s diary.

I asked him why was his father’s details empty.

He smiled and called me closer.

Woh divorce hota hai na, woh hua hai un logo mein. Papa sath mein nahi rehte

(They are divorced. Father does not stay with us)

I was numb. A 3rd standard kid, just 8 years old, knows a such a big word like divorce and even the meaning of it. In the age of innocence, he knows about divorce. I gave back his diary. He was still smiling, but a little embarrassed too.

I could not look in to his eyes for the entire class. The moment the bell rang, I went to my desk and cried a lot. I felt extremely bad for everything. For him, for my behavior towards him, my negligence, my anger for him, and everything I ever told him.

I could not imagine a small kid knowing that word. I mean, who would wish their kid to know such words.

I informed all his subject teachers to handle him with a lot of care and support. We could meet his mother, and also discussed the issue with her. Touch wood, he is doing well now.
