How unsafe is a gun range?

“Bullets can ricochet off the walls, firearms can go off by accident, people can intentionally shoot someone and then say oopsy. Or a psychopath can actually now down people when no one is looking.”

NO, NO, NO, AND NO.

Sweet Christmas but I've never seen anyone who was so wrapped up in misconceptions and anti-gun stereotypes. Simple logic should have told you that none of that is the case, because if it was then you would sure hear about it more often.

Seriously, sit down and really think about this. How many news stories have you ever heard of anyone ever being shot at a gun range, intentionally or accidentally? How many mass shootings have you ever heard of that took place at a gun range?

Literally every part of your question is wrong.

  1. Bullets do not “ricochet off walls” like they do in the movies. That's Hollywood garbage. When a bullet does ricochet it loses the vast majority of its energy and often fractures into tiny pieces. It sure as Hell doesn't bounce around the room like a superball.
  2. Firearms do not just “go off by accident”. Not modern firearms anyway. This again is Hollywood garbage. Guns are in fact carefully engineered to be as safe as possible, and every gun range that I have ever heard of enforces strict safety rules. Anyone handling a gun in a careless manner will be spotted in an instant and they can and will be thrown out for violating the rules.
  3. Really? You think some clever murderer could shoot someone at a gun range, claim it was an “accident”, and just walk away? At the least that would be a clear case of manslaughter. Hardly the perfect crime you imply it to be.
  4. Again, really? You think some crazy person can just “show up” at a gun range and “mow people down” with impunity? You do realize that all those other people at that range have guns of their own, right? Exactly how long do you think your hypothetical psycho will last before everyone pumps him full of lead? And again, if this is such a risk, why do we never hear about it happening?

Come on, man. You could have answered this question yourself if you had spared ten seconds to think about it.
