For me on a personal level, it was when my new wife from Scotland prepared her daily favorite food for dinner. It was boiled, mashed then buttered turnips. I was 24 yrs. old had been around the world twice, been on six seas, six continents and 3 overseas tours including 1 year of combat and had never ever eaten a turnip before.
That is when I fully realized we were from different stock. I was a good boy and ate the damn things. I knew which side of the bread my butter was on.
