What is the wittiest thing a child has ever said to you?

When I was in high school and my sister Claire was in elementary school, my parents asked me to help her expand her vocabulary. So we came up with a game called the Synonym Game.

Basically, I’d start us off with a simple word like “sad”, and then Claire and I would take turns thinking of words with similar meanings, like “despondent” and “doleful” and “dejected.” Whoever lasted longer would win the round.

One time, we played with “to say”, and it was a closely matched battle. I started with “speak” and she said “proclaim”; I said “vocalize” and she countered with “orate.”

After several more rounds, we were both starting to run out of ideas.

“Um…” I said, racking my brain. Then I looked at her triumphantly, and said, “Declare.”

Claire glared at me and said, “De-hannah.”

With or without vocabulary skills, that kid sure can think on her feet.
