Imagine you are in a bar, talking to a friend. Then a guy approaches you, wearing a big hat, and begins to tell you an amazing story :
“In my hat, I have all of the people of the world who are currently alive. And you can switch places with any of them !! All you need to do is dip your hand in, pick one, and their life will become yours!”
He removes his hat, and invites you to pick a life, any life.
You think of all the people you envy. That have more than you have. But then you remember that most of them are people you know or have heard about. They are on your radar screen. So you then begin to think about those you don’t know, or have never heard about. China, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Libia, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Mongolia, Ghana, Nigeria, Venezuela, Somalia…. . It could be anyone. Absolutely anyone.
And you thank the man, and politely decline the offer.
And that is probably because when faced with the stark truth of it, you realise that most of our society is a lot worse off than we are. And the only thing more shocking than that, is how little our behaviour changes as a consequence.
That’s what’s wrong with our society today.
