As a kid, I found the world very difficult. I failed to enjoy almost everything kids love to do.
I could not play soccer, I would always pass the ball to an opponent, or miss the ball passed towards me. Playing cricket was the hardest - for the life of me I could not fathom how one can time their shots and put bat on ball! The story of other sports were more or less same - I realized I just suck at team games.
School was okay, but I had to seat on the front row to get the lecture clearly from the blackboard. Often times, I would score bad on the tests because I failed to take down whatever on the board properly.
One day my father discovered I had to go to a friends house to get the lecture even though I went to the class that day. He sat down with me, and found out I did not see the blackboard. From. the. first. row.
Turned out, I had myopia (Near-sightedness), and got heavy glasses (-4, with additional cylindrical correction).
I was in class five, aged about 9–1/2. My world changed that day - I could look out the window and see the leaves! I finally realized how other people can go about their days so easily.
Myopia made me read a lot, think a lot, because that’s all there was to do before I got my glasses. However, I was still pretty bad at sports, so probably that’s not the fault of my late diagnoses!
This image shows how the world looks like for a myopic person:
